L’attività dell’escavazione dell’alabastro a Castellina tra le due guerre (1919 -1939).

 

Quello che è emerso nella mia precedente nota, è una fotografia sociale di una realtà interessata da un fenomeno evolutivo, che la porterà agli inizi del XX secolo ad identificarsi strettamente con l’escavazione dell’alabastro.

Tant’ è che negli anni 1913/14 le cave della Società Anonima Marmolajo impegnano oltre 150 addetti. Con lo scoppio del 1° conflitto mondiale, nelle cave rimasero pochi operai addetti alle manutenzioni e che si limitavano a scavare quella minima quantità d’alabastro per far fronte alle richieste provenienti dalle Americhe. Con la fine del conflitto, l’attività riprese progressivamente tanto da occupare complessivamente circa 1000 operai (1920-26).

In tale periodo a Castellina erano presenti tre Società impegnate nell’escavazione: la Società Anonima Marmolajo, con sede in Pisa, la Società Anonima Castellina, con sede in Livorno e la Ditta Eredi Avv. Rossi-Ciampolini. La produzione estrattiva è ai suoi massimi: basti pensare che nelle sole cave della Società Marmolajo (per la quale abbiamo i dati forniti dal Novaria), al 1928 si arriva ad estrarre 44.359 quintali d’alabastro (punta massima nel mese di maggio con q.li 4.838).

Il periodo che va dal 1919 al 1929 circa, può essere paragonato per la sua intensa e vivace attività al ventennio 1850-70 in cui il settore alabastrino ebbe un forte impulso con l’avvio di numerose fabbriche e laboratori.

La situazione è rispecchiata anche dalle statistiche ufficiali. Infatti, nella ‘Relazione sul servizio minerario e statistica delle industrie estrattive in Italia nell’anno 1935’, si può leggere che:

…L'alabastro gessoso bianco, scavato con lavori sotterranei nel Volterrano (Pisa), che nel 1926 superò le 14.000 tonnellate, e si mantenne sulle 13.000 fino al 1929,

Purtroppo da tale data, però, tutto il settore subì una profonda crisi.

Si legge sempre nella sopra citata relazione:

….(l’escavazione) andò in questi ultimi anni progressivamente declinando fino a ridursi a 3.530 tonnellate nel 1934. Nel 1935 si nota un aumento di 690 tonnellate sul 1934, ciò che fa sperare sulla ripresa di questa interessante Industria che manda i suoi prodotti greggi e lavorati in tutto il mondo.

Purtroppo ciò non  avverrà: nella stessa relazione mineraria relativa l’anno 1939, è riportato:

L’alabastro gessoso del Volterrano (l’alabastro di Castellina era accomunato nominalmente a quello di Volterra N.d.A.) stenta a riprendersi dopo la caduta di questi ultimi anni, e sarà ben difficile possa più raggiungere la produzione del 1926, che superò le tonn. 14.000. La diminuzione verificatasi nel 1939, rispetto al 1938, è stata di tonn. 1.535.

Complessivamente, nel 1939 furono escavate 1.550 tonnellate, con una diminuzione dell’89% rispetto alle 14.000 del 1926 !

Le motivazioni che portarono ad una si fatta caduta furono molteplici, ma senz’altro il principale imputato fu il tracollo economico americano del 1929 che si ripercosse sul sistema economico globale, colpendo in prima istanza, tutte quei prodotti d’importazione, tra cui anche l’alabastro.

La crisi definitiva si avrà dal 1940 con la 2^ guerra mondiale, che di fatto paralizzerà quasi completamente la produzione d’alabastro.

CASTELLINA, LE PROFESSIONI E I MESTIERI ( 1841 )

 

In un contesto di crescita sociale ed economica, in primo piano si viene a collocare quale indicatore basilare,l’analisi del fattore demografico; sia dal punto di vista degli individui presenti sia sotto il profilo della espressione lavorativa da essi svolta.

Quanto diremo emerge da un’analisi condotta sullo stato delle Anime del 1841 ( in relazione al primo censimento Granducale) di Castellina Marittima.

In esso sono censite 244 famiglie abitanti nella Parrocchia di San Giovanni Battista, di queste n. 18 sono in qualche modo correlate all’attività di escavazione dell’alabastro, ad esse debbono aggiungere ulteriori tre famiglie ‘impegnate’ nell’escavazione del rame, (altra attività allora presente sul territorio) per un totale di 21 famiglie pari all'8,60% del complessivo.

Tra queste si censiscono 19 ‘scavatori d’alabastri’, n.1 ‘maestro di miniera’, n.1 ‘scavatore di rame in Montevaso’ e un ‘sorvegliante alle cave di rame ‘

Bisogna ricordare che lo Stato delle Anime nella quasi globalità, riporta la professione del capofamiglia tralasciando quella degli altri componenti; comunque, questi ci offre uno spaccato abbastanza esaustivo sulla realtà sociale del tempo (vedi tabella fine articolo).

Ciò detto il dato sugli addetti all'escavazione contrasta palesemente  con la cifra riportata dal Fiumi, il quale fa ammontare gli stessi a n.81 unità occupati in tredici cave ( a Volterra ne esistevano otto ).

Ritenendo attendibili le cifre riportate dal Fiumi, è plausibile pensare che al 1841 i cavatori per la maggior parte dovessero provenire ancora da altri territori.

Qualunque siano le deduzioni emergenti dallo studio delle professioni riportate sullo Stato delle Anime, l’industria dell’escavazione sta definendosi sul territorio (come emerge dai dati del Fiumi).

È comunque anche vero che ancora il popolo castellinese, è sostanzialmente un popolo ancora dedito all'agricoltura (40,21%) in cui molti lavoratori operavano in un arco professionale estremamente aperto e poco qualificato, rimanendo quasi tutti entro l'ambito dei mestieri più umili (22,3%).

Di contro, una presenza di n. 85 tra possidenti e proprietari ( con tutte le riserve su tale locuzione), sono la prova più eclatante di quella politica lorenese tesa a creare una nuova ‘borghesia rurale’ di proprietari che si contrapponesse alla classe nobiliare, spesso assenteista. Alcuni di essi, poi, si trasformeranno in imprenditori del settore dell’alabastro.

Interessante risulta anche il dato sugli occupati nel settore artigianale, che con il suo 7,00%, si colloca al quarto posto dopo il possidente e prima degli ‘escavatori d’alabastri’.

Piuttosto blando, invece, è il dato degli addetti ai ‘servizi’ soprattutto relativamente all'attività dei barrocciai e vetturini, che con le sue n.5 unità, è estremamente basso per un territorio in cui in un decennio dal 1829 al 1838, furono estratte dal 4 ai 6 milioni di libbre, pari a 1358-2037 tonnellate di alabastro.
